Our Ethos

Abacus Belsize Primary School is a Primary School which opened in September 2013 under the Free Schools Programme to help meet the local need for school places. A member of the Anthem Trust family of schools, we are secular and welcome children from all backgrounds.

Our mission is to foster a positive, creative and multi-sensory learning environment that inspires each child to maximise their individual talents, curiosity and ability to think.

Our motto isI see, I hear, I do and I learn.”  We believe all children are entitled to enjoy their childhood and live it actively. Our aim at Abacus is to make a positive contribution to the development of children as individuals and as members of the community. We want to give children a sense of who they are and where they belong in the world. This involves encouraging respect for other people’s viewpoints.

We are a car free, walking school.

We achieve these aims through focusing on our 3 C’s:

Our curriculum is rich, ambitious and personalised to the needs of each child. Based on the National Curriculum, we begin with a strong core of English and Mathematics and enrich the children’s day with rich curriculum, including half termly 'Heath Days' to extend their learning beyond the classroom. We also introduce Mandarin from Reception upwards. Children gain early experience of a foreign language and culture, through songs, rhyme, and dance.

We are a small, inclusive school, serving a socially diverse community. Built by the community, and for the community, we welcome parents, carers and community members and encourage them to take an active part in our children’s education.

We consider communication with parents and carers vital and will keep them updated regularly on their child’s progress and how they can support their learning, through weekly newsletters and daily book diaries. Teaching staff will be available at each bus stop collection point each week for a brief word at the start of the day to address any minor concerns at an early stage.

At Abacus we believe children learn differently but that they all deserve the right to:

  • Aspire to achieve the best they can, academically
  • Believe in themselves, being balanced and broad-minded
  • Considerate, confident, tolerant and independent children
  • Develop a life-long love of learning
  • Enjoy their childhood!
  • Be a fearless reader
  • Be an adventurous learner
  • Be adept at a second language
  • Thrive!
